No, the sabians are the drummer from sleeps current project. I've seen them a few times and talked to them a little. The project may have some stoner influence, but it's nothing in the realm of sleep. The sabians are local, and I was supposed to be setting up shows with them at our space, but I lack hustle. Al's project has no name (at least, not that I've heard), and I think it's only two guys now. I've not heard anything of it yet other than some friends of mine kinda live where he's crashing, and they get it through the wall or something. I don't know... they all say it's good though, but it's not sleep or any style close i guess.

The Sabians also have Justin, the second guitarist and sometime vocalist from Sleep Vol. 1, on vocals and guitar. It's actually more his project. He's also the one who quit Sleep and joined a monestary for 9 years. From what I've heard, Al's new project is just bass and drums, and the drummer is none other than Chris Hakius.

re: Al Cisneros and God - actually, I think he and Matt were both remarkably into this tangent even back in later Sleep days, hence the album 'Jerusalem' and all that Revelations stuff... Sleep was the best thing musically to ever come out of San Jose, bar none. I was working in one of the downtown clubs they played in frequently and got to kinda know 'em, all super-cool fellas who loved herb as much as me n' my crew... at the time, most of the bands in SJ were trying to jump on the grunge bandwagon and had all these fake-ass Pearl Jizm wannabes singing from the back of their mouth like all the other Seattle bands- when Sleep set foot on stage, people stopped and took notice. To quote the words of one fan, "they just BATTERED!" Another time I happened to be in LA w/ my then GF and saw that they were opening for Hawkwind, which I just couldn't miss. Went down there early and Matt actually bumped some label schmuck from the list just to get me (a lowly hometown bouncer) in for free... And I still wear my old Sleep tee shirt to this day. (sniffl...)
