I missed Kalas a few months ago so was glad to see them do another gig. This was at the Golden Bull which is a dive bar in Oakland, CA. Sunday 12-18-05. This place is not the best of venues but they do have a "pro" sound person there as well as some stage lights. The atmosphere and crowd suited Matt Pike perfectly. Everyone was liquored up, chain smoking, trying to avoid stepping in broken glass, spilled drinks and whatever else. This is a sunday night around 10:30PM or so when they went on. The guy is a righteous frontman with presence. He does not play guitar in this band, just sings (and of course writes the tunes)
Kalas is different than HoF as well as Sleep (much different than Sleep actually). Kalas is crusty doom but more "gray" metalish somewhere between black and atmospheric. The Kalas tunes were edgy as well. HoF is more of a Motorhead type of grind by way of comparison.
So these tunes are all new for their forthcoming release on Tee Pee in April '06. From what I heard, this is a can't miss release. It just destroys.
This was a special performance being so close up and right on top of the band. I have some pics but they are crappy.
I still smell like stale smoke even after two showers 24 hours after leaving that club.

Re: Kalas (Matt Pike Side Project) Live in Oakland, CA
Wed, February 1, 2006 - 10:48 PMhey! we write the tunes, matt writes the lyrics (although i did throw in a few lines)... so you owe me some new and interesting drug i haven't ever even heard of to try, or a bottle of some great aged whiskey i've been meaning to afford. on the other hand, new jams not on the record :may: have matt on 3rd guitar, so in the future you may be only somewhat misguided and not wrong. if paralyzed scientists know a thing or two, perception of time as linear is simply an illusion, so maybe you're 1/2 right. fuck it, smoke me out and we're even.
